My Story – The Wake-Up Call That Created the No-Nonsense Guide

I’ve always been known as the techy uncle, the one who gets excited about every new gadget and loves staying ahead of where technology is heading.

But when my niece and nephew came along, I started to worry. I watched them grow up in the iPad era of parenting, devices handed over to keep them quiet. And yes, I did benefit from those “quiet times,” so I didn’t push as hard as I should have.

Then one day it all changed. My 10-year-old niece was being bullied online by someone we thought was her friend. When we were shown the messages telling her to kill herself, it absolutely broke our hearts. The secret texting, the anger when anyone touched her phone, it all suddenly made sense.

Seeing my sister feel completely powerless and lost in that moment killed me. But it didn’t stop there.

While checking my 6-year-old nephew’s devices, we discovered TikTok and Roblox accounts where grown men were adding him because his profile wasn’t private. He was playing scary games at night and struggling to sleep. It was terrifying. Of course, when my sister tried to research online, she was flooded with hundreds of articles of “do this, do that” guides, and honestly at that point she gave up.

That was the moment I stepped in. I started setting up their devices properly, adding protections, and helping my sister reset their family’s whole approach to online safety.

It wasn’t until I began doing all this that I started to ask the question: “Why hasn’t anyone made a simple, dumbed-down guide that’s just easy for busy parents?” That’s when the vision for this book became clear.

And yes, I don’t have a degree. I’m not as smart as the professionals online, and they are definitely who you should reach out to for serious concerns. But for me, I couldn’t just sit there complaining on Facebook. I saw something that hurt my family and decided to build a tool to help other parents avoid that same pain.

Chances are, you’re reading this right now as a parent who feels overwhelmed, worried, or even a little scared about keeping your kids safe online. I’ll do my best to change that for you. But as a warning: I tried to cover everything, so some Sections, like the one about when your own child might be the bully, might feel uncomfortable. But they’re there because they need to be spoken about.

The digital world moves so fast. New apps, new risks, new fears every single week. One minute you’re trying to figure out parental controls; the next you’re lying awake wondering if you’re doing enough or if you’re already falling behind.

The mission of this book is simple: putting the power back in parents’ hands all around Australia, so they can feel safe online again.
